Spirit, Intuition & the Art of Discernment
Why recognising an impression is only the beginning of understanding it.
Is It Spirit or Your Own Thoughts? Understanding Spiritual Communication
One of the questions I am frequently asked as a Psychic Medium is:
“How do I know whether I’m receiving communication from Spirit, or whether it’s simply my own thoughts?”
It is a wonderful question, because learning to recognise and understand your own experiences is an important part of spiritual development.
Many people believe that spiritual communication must arrive as an unmistakable voice, a dramatic vision or an extraordinary experience.
Yet those exploring their intuitive abilities often describe something far more subtle.
A fleeting image. An unexpected memory. A feeling they cannot immediately explain. A sudden sense of knowing.
But how do we begin to understand these experiences?
Understanding Your Own Mind
Before attempting to interpret an experience as spiritual communication, it is important to become familiar with your everyday thoughts.
Our minds are constantly processing memories, emotions, expectations and information.
Sometimes a thought feels particularly meaningful because it connects with something we have been carrying emotionally.
This does not make the experience unimportant.
It simply means that discernment matters.
How People Describe Spiritual Communication
Within spiritual and mediumistic traditions, people describe receiving impressions through different intuitive senses, often called the clairs.
These include:
– Clairvoyance: Images or impressions experienced through the mind’s eye.
– Clairaudience: An impression of hearing words, sounds or messages.
– Clairsentience: Emotional or physical sensations associated with an impression.
– Claircognizance: A sudden feeling of knowing something.
– Clairalience: Experiences involving an unexplained scent.
– Clairgustance: Experiences involving taste.
These descriptions are part of spiritual practice. None of these sensations, by themselves, establishes that communication has come from Spirit.
The Importance of Discernment
One of the greatest lessons in spiritual development is learning not to force an interpretation.
You do not need to assign spiritual meaning to every sensation, thought or coincidence.
Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is simply observe.
Ask yourself:
Am I approaching this experience calmly, or am I searching for a particular answer?
Could my emotions, memories or expectations be influencing what I am experiencing?
Can I allow this experience to remain unexplained for now?
There is strength in recognising that we do not always have to know immediately.
A Simple Exercise in Awareness
Find somewhere comfortable and quiet.
Allow your shoulders to relax and breathe naturally.
Notice the thoughts passing through your mind without attempting to change them.
Pay attention to how memories, feelings and images arise.
If something feels significant, write it down.
Return to your notes another day and consider what you experienced with a fresh perspective.
This exercise is not designed to prove spiritual contact. It is an opportunity to understand your own awareness more deeply.
Spiritual Development Is a Journey
Throughout my work as a Psychic Medium, I have always believed that spiritual development should encourage understanding rather than fear.
There is no need to rush, force experiences or compare your journey with somebody else’s.
Allow yourself to explore, question, learn and develop at a pace that feels comfortable.
And remember, uncertainty is not failure. It is often where genuine learning begins.
Have you ever experienced something that made you wonder whether it was intuition, Spirit or simply your own thoughts?
You are warmly invited to explore these subjects with me through Psychic Ask Away | Spirit & Soul, where we discuss spiritual awareness, the clairs, mediumship and the questions that arise along the way.
